Responsibility for Learning on Teachers or Students?

This blog post is in response to:

In the blog that is linked above, Ben Johnson raises the question of who is responsible for learning in the classroom? Does the responsibility to ensure that learning is taking place that of the teachers or of the students?  When Ben posed this question at a faculty meeting his teaching staff had mixed feelings.  In this blog Ben discusses the need for teachers to have the mentality that "all students will learn in my classroom."  On the other hand, students need to have to want to learn something as well to have the perfect atmosphere for learning to take place.  As a teacher, I know that all students will and do learn in my classroom and I need to set the bar high and help students to reach positive goals throughout the year.

  1. I think that it is important for teachers to try to reach all of their students. I think that is the job of an educator. I do think students have to take some responsibility for their own learning, but I think this does not mean teachers should not try to keep teaching their students to the best of their abilities.
I think that is great that your expect your students to learn, which is a lot better than expecting them not too. I think all students are capable of learning, but I think their involvement can crank it up a lot.

  2. You mentioned goals for your students, I think that this is a wonderful way to help students take responsibility in their learning. If they can set attainable goals for themselves, it gives them something to work towards.

  3. Having students set goals is a great thing! It gives them a since of control and accomplishment when they reach their goals. Your helping them by succeed with little goals before they need to set and make their own as young adults or adults. Great! :)
